“Persona is too easy”
This is a phrase I’ve been seeing a lot over the past few years and a sentiment that i myself share. One of the most important parts of video games is their challenge. While you might fully agree with that statement, it’s impossible to deny that difficulty is at the core of the experience. Especially when we’re talking about role-playing games. The Persona franchise has garnered a reputation for being one of the more casual rpg’s out there. They’re games that can easily be recommended to beginners because they’re full of gameplay options that can trivialize combat encounters. What’s funny is that back in the day, Persona and Shin Megami Tensei had a very different reputation.
Once upon a time, Atlus was known as the company that made deep and compelling combat systems that weren’t afraid to kick you down until you mastered them. If there was one thing that defined the types of games they made, it would be their level of challenge. They were so well known for their brutal difficulty that fans would affectionately refer to their games as “Atlus hard.” Though lately I feel as though we should be referring to their games as “Atlus easy,” so what’s been going on? How come, as personas evolve in mechanics and design, do the games seem to become more and more laid-back experiences? Why is this even a problem to begin with? Persona as a franchise has always had insane potential for its gameplay mechanics, but for one reason or another, Atlus has stunted that growth. Difficulty is an extremely important part of game design. So, for today, I want to dedicate some time talking about how Persona’s challenge has changed over the years and the negative impact it has on the experience. Persona wasn’t always this easy, and here’s why that’s a problem.
Persona's Difficulty Problem. One of the most common talking points with Modern Persona is Persona's Difficulty Problem. Many people who love Persona 5 Royal, Persona 3 Reload, and Persona 4 Golden all share the common critique that Persona is too easy. What's funny about Persona's Difficulty Problem is that this wasn't always the case. Some of the Hardest Persona games are from the early years of the franchise. Games like Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5 are all uniquely challenging in their own way. They offer a special experience that Persona 3 Reload, Persona 4 Revival, and Persona 5 Royal fail to capture. In this video, I will be talking about Persona's Difficulty Problem, what's causing it, and how we can fix it. This isn't a critique of Persona 4 Revival, Persona 3 Reload, and Persona 5 Royal as video games. Rather, it's an examination of Persona 4 Revival, Persona 3 Reload, and Persona 5 Royal game mechanics and design. I care a lot about these games and just want to see them improve, not stagnate. If people love the new direction that Persona 4 Revival, Persona 3 Reload, and Persona 5 Royal have taken, then more power to you. But for veterines like Nam's Compendium, Persona has a lot it still needs to work on so it can be the best version of itself. Receive SMS online on sms24.me
