Chitetsu's Masterpiece
Yasui Chitetsu vs Honinbo DosakuYasui Chitetsu (安井 知哲, 1644 – June 27, 1700) was a Go player of the Edo period and the third head of the Yasui family. He was the third son of the first Yasui Santetsu and the younger brother of the second Yasui Santetsu (Shibukawa Harumi). He is noted for his rivalry with Honinbō Dōsaku.
Chitetsu left 48 game records with Hon'inbō Dōsaku, the most among Dōsaku’s opponents. There are records of results for a much larger number of games, sadly most of the game records are lost. Initially, Dōsaku was given two stones against Chitetsu, but after 30 games with six adjustments, the handicap changed to Chitetsu playing Black. Chitetsu was later pushed down to two stones but had a slight advantage in these two-stone games, winning 26 to 25 overall, and later the handicap was adjusted to Sen-Ni, or between 1 and 2 stones.
Honinbo Dosaku (1645-1702)
Dōsaku was one of the greatest Go players in history. He was born in the Iwami Province of Japan and studied Go in the Hon'inbō school, becoming Meijin at a very young age.
Dōsaku was the fourth Hon'inbō by the time he was 32, and the fourth Meijin by the time he was 33. He started to learn Go at 7. Dōsaku was so strong by the time he was in his early 20s that even if someone played the first move, he would always win. Rumors were that he was two stones stronger than any other Go player. This was due to his deep thinking and next-level tactics. He laid the foundation for opening strategy in the Golden Period.
