WHEN FEAR PREDICTS REALITY | Nguyen Phuong Le | TEDxVinUniversity
Drawing on the Predictive Processing Model, Dr. Nguyen Phuong Le pointed out that before we can see an event as it is happening, the brain has already started predicting what will happen next. These prediction models are shaped by family, school, culture, relationships, and the expectations we absorb as we grow up. Therefore, sometimes we are not reacting to reality itself, but to what the mind has learned to predict from the past. The problem begins when these prediction models are built on fear. When we are constantly alert, silence can easily be interpreted as rejection, criticism can be seen as failure, and a small mistake can turn into a lasting sense of shame. The more we believe in these predictions, the harder it becomes to see reality as it truly unfolds.
To change these prediction models, Dr. Phuong introduced three important steps: noticing what we are predicting, regulating our mind, and stepping into new experiences so the brain can learn that the outcome may be different from what the past has taught it to expect. Therefore, overcoming limits is not only about having more opportunities, technology, or external resources. It is also about learning to enter a new reality without continuing to use an old prediction model to understand it.
Therefore, to break a limit, we may need to begin by questioning the patterns of thought that once made us believe the limit was real. With over two decades of experience in educational leadership and psychology, Dr. Nguyen Phuong Le has dedicated his work to helping individuals understand and reshape the internal limits that shape their lives. He is the first and only Vietnamese recipient of the “Outstanding International School Psychologist” award (ISPA, 2011), holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership (Educational Psychology) from the University of Southern California, and has over 20 years of experience across major school districts in California. He is also the Founder of the Consortium for the Advancement of School Psychology in Vietnam (CASP-V), a Fulbright Specialist (2014–2019), author of the award-winning book series *Dạy con trong hoang mang*, and a corporate trainer for local and international organizations.
