Power Apps Modern Controls: Microsoft’s BIGGEST Combo Box Update (Fixes & New Features)
Microsoft dropped a major update to Modern Controls in Power Apps — and it fixes many of the issues makers have struggled with since modern controls were introduced.In this video, we take a first look at the latest Modern Control updates, with a deep dive into what is easily the BIGGEST improvement so far: the Modern Combo Box control.
The Combo Box is the primary way users make selections in most canvas apps, and this update addresses several areas where it was previously falling short — including scenarios like People Picker and multi-select experiences.
The earlier version had a practical item limit of around 800 records when bound to a data source — a constraint that forced workarounds in many real-world apps. The updated control now handles several thousand items directly. For very large datasets, the new SearchText output property enables server-side filtering, allowing the control to scale to enterprise-level data.
Beyond data scale, this update also improves selection behavior and form reliability. Selections can now be cleared by clicking a selected item — meaning the control finally behaves the way makers expected from the start.
This finally enables proper multi-select People Picker patterns, making it much easier to build modern, user-friendly selection experiences and use them reliably inside forms, including when working with SharePoint as a data source.
