Nel 1510 Martin Lutero, frate agostiniano tedesco, arriva a Roma, città trasformata in un enorme cantiere sotto il pontificato di Giulio II, impegnato nella costruzione della nuova basilica di San Pietro. Per finanziare i lavori, la Chiesa introduce il sistema delle indulgenze, attraverso donazioni in cambio della cancellazione dei peccati. L’esperienza romana segna profondamente Lutero, che rimane colpito dal clima di corruzione e dalla commistione tra potere religioso e interessi politici.Rientrato in Germania, Lutero decide di contestare apertamente la pratica delle indulgenze. Nel 1517, a Wittenberg, diffonde le 95 tesi, un atto destinato a trasformare la storia della Cristianità e a dare origine alla Riforma protestante. Il suo bersaglio è l’autorità papale, accusata di sfruttare economicamente i fedeli per sostenere la costruzione di San Pietro.Wittenberg diventa un centro di pensiero critico e rinnovamento religioso, attirando nel tempo altri intellettuali.
