How I Upgraded Linux Mint 22.3 to Linux Mint 23 (Alfa) Before Release – Mint 23 Alfa First Look

Can you upgrade Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon directly to Linux Mint 23, codenamed Alfa, before its official release? In this video, I answer that question by upgrading my own Linux Mint 22.3 installation to the current Linux Mint 23 development branch. Instead of performing a clean installation, I modify the official repositories, install the latest development packages, reboot the system, and verify whether the upgrade is successful.

This is not an official upgrade path and should only be attempted by experienced Linux users who understand the risks of using development software. Before making any changes, I create a complete Timeshift snapshot, ensuring the system can be restored if anything goes wrong.

During this guide, you'll see the entire process from start to finish, including verifying the existing Linux Mint 22.3 installation, editing the repository configuration, updating from the development repositories, rebooting into Linux Mint 23, and confirming the upgrade using Neofetch and System Information.

Unlike many preview videos, this isn't a fresh installation. This is a real upgrade performed on an existing Linux Mint system, allowing us to see how well the current development branch behaves after the transition.

In this video you'll learn:

✔ Upgrading Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon to Linux Mint 23 (Alfa)
✔ Preparing your system before using development repositories
✔ Creating a complete Timeshift backup
✔ Editing Linux Mint and Ubuntu repositories
✔ Verifying the upgraded system
✔ What changes after upgrading
✔ Whether the current development branch is usable
✔ Who should—and shouldn't—try this upgrade

This video is intended for Linux enthusiasts, developers, testers, and anyone curious about the future of Linux Mint. If you're considering experimenting with upcoming releases, this walkthrough will help you understand both the process and the risks involved.
