Alejandro Vergara, del Museo del Prado, nos habla de una de las exigencias que han guiado la actividad de los pintores europeos durante siglos: transmitir emoción. Para ello los pintores y escultores estudiaron fisionomía, buscando síntomas externos de los diferentes estados de ánimo, y se fijaron en los movimientos de la musculatura del rostro humano. Una idea que se generalizó fue que expresaría mejor un sentimiento intenso, de dolor, por ejemplo, aquel artista que lo hubiese sentido en carne propia.
