Tra i citati comparivano anche Giorgio Bianchi e il giornalista e geografo Manlio Di Nucci. La vicenda sollevò allora un acceso dibattito: il Copasir smentì di aver fornito una lista di nomi, mentre l'allora sottosegretario con delega all'intelligence Franco Gabrielli chiarì che il documento reale, poi desecretato, non conteneva alcun elenco. Interpellata sulle polemiche, la vicedirettrice del Corriere difese comunque il lavoro della redazione, spiegando che si trattava di "una relazione mandata al Copasir dall'intelligence" e non di un atto contro la libertà di opinione.
