Iran deliberately widening war to make it 'too expensive for everyone,' says Trita Parsi
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has declared negotiations with Washington "off the table," stating that despite three rounds of talks and reported progress, the US and Israel chose to attack.Trita Parsi, Executive Vice President of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, told Al Jazeera that US-Israeli strikes have created "apocalyptic" scenes in Tehran, with refineries ablaze and the city shrouded in black smoke. He noted the decapitation strategy—aimed at triggering leadership collapse—has backfired, as the system has closed ranks around new leaders, strengthening internal unity.
Parsi explained Iran has shifted to persistent, lower-intensity attacks targeting the global economy rather than mass casualties, aiming to raise oil prices above $150 and inflict inflation to break American "pain tolerance." This strategy seeks to raise costs for all parties, potentially forcing Washington to the negotiating table while denying the US an opportunity to regroup and relaunch military pressure.
He noted that while the attacks have triggered a temporary "rally around the flag" effect, pushing the population closer to the regime despite its deep unpopularity, public anger at the theocracy remains beneath the surface. This nationalist unity is likely only to last as long as the war continues and does not indicate enduring popularity for Iran's leadership.
Parsi warned the conflict could escalate regionally or even involve Europe if costs are not contained, concluding that Iran is deliberately widening the war to make it "too expensive for everyone."
