Why suddenly having money (often) goes wrong | Tom Henske | TEDxNaples

We have all heard the story that most lottery winners end up broke. The truth, however, is that it’s a myth. But the problem it points to, Sudden Wealth Syndrome, is very real. From college athletes signing their first NIL deal, to young professionals receiving a bonus, to families navigating an inheritance, sudden money creates emotional whiplash that can turn excitement into fear, guilt, and regret. In his talk, Tom Henske unpacks why smart people make “Ready, Fire, Aim” mistakes when money arrives. He shares the 4 P’s that transform sudden wealth from chaos into clarity.

Tom Henske, a two-time All-American and three-time NCAA National Champion at the University of Virginia, carried that high-pressure discipline into the world of personal finance. With nearly 30 years as a Certified Financial Planner, he founded his own firm, guided it through a public acquisition, and earned credentials including CFP®, ChFC®, and SE-AWMA®. He is the author of NIL Financial Playbook, It Makes Total Cents, and From Me to We. He also founded Total Cents, a platform that helps parents teach their kids real-world money skills. Today, Henske equips college athletes to prepare for the financial realities of NIL opportunities, driven by his mission to make financial literacy timely, practical, and part of everyday life.
