Jembatan terpanjang di Indonesia ini diresmikan pada 10 Juni 2009 oleh Presiden ke-6 RI Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY).
Biaya pembangunan Jembatan Suramadu menelan dana hingga Rp 4,5 miliar yang berasal dari alokasi APBN.
Untuk membangun jembatan sepanjang lima kilometer ini, ada 3500 pekerja dari Indonesia dan China yang melakukan pengerjaan.
Rupanya Jembatan Suramadu memiliki kisah yang cukup panjang, bermula dari pencetusannya pada 1960-an atau di era Presiden Soekarno oleh insinyur sipil bernama Prof Dr Sedyatmo.
Lalu pada akhir 1990, Presiden Soeharto membentuk Tim Nusa Bakti yang merupakan gabungan tim ahli Indonesia dan Jepang.
Namun pada 1997, rencana ini dihentikan sementara karena krisis moneter yang melanda Indonesia dan negara lain.
Pada 20 Juli 2003, Presiden ke-5 RI Megawati Soekarnoputri meresmikan kembali pembangunan jembatan.
Butuh waktu hingga enam tahun untuk menyelesaikan proyek ini sebelum diresmikan oleh Presiden SBY.
