Hal ini menandai eskalasi signifikan dalam respons militer terhadap gelombang protes besar-besaran atas kebijakan imigrasi agresif pemerintahannya.
Seorang pejabat pemerintahan Trump mengatakan, para prajurit akan bertindak hanya untuk mendukung Garda Nasional.
Trump juga disebut terbuka untuk mengerahkan marinir ke Los Angeles.
Langkah ini dilakukan meski tanpa persetujuan dari Gubernur California, Gavin Newsom dan Wali Kota LA yang menentang keras keputusan tersebut.
Dalam pidatonya, Trump membela keputusan tersebut dan mengatakan pasukan diperlukan untuk mengatasi kerusuhan.
"Bagi orang-orang yang ingin berunjuk rasa, mereka akan ditanggapi dengan kekuatan yang sangat besar," kata Trump, dikutip dari Reuters.
Menanggapi keputusan Trump, Gubernur California Gavin Newsom menyebut Trump sebagai ancaman terhadap hidup AS.
Ia menganggap intervensi militer federal di LA sebagai awal dari upaya Trump untuk menumbangkan norma-norma politik dan budaya di jantung demokrasi bangsa.
Newsom juga mengklaim pengerahan ratusan marinir ini adalah 'perang' terencana yang dimaksudkan untuk menjungkirbalikkan pondasi masyarakat dan memusatkan kekuasaan di Gedung Putih.
"California mungkin yang pertama, tetapi jelas tidak akan berakhir di sini. Negara bagian lain akan menyusul," kata Newsom, dikutip dari AP News.
