Trump pivots to diplomacy as Iran war pressure mounts at home | This is America

In this episode of This is America, hosted by Anna Burns-Francis, Al Jazeera examines President Trump's surprise pivot from threatening to bomb Iranian power plants to announcing a five-day pause for diplomatic talks. White House correspondent Kimberly Halkett reported that the administration attributes the shift to the "success" of Operation Epic Fury, claiming core military objectives were met in 25 days, though the White House denied a 15-point proposal had been formally presented to Iran. On Capitol Hill, Patty Culhane noted that another War Powers resolution failed along party lines, with Republicans largely sticking with the president, though rising gas prices and the prospect of ground troops could erode support.
The programme featured former Reagan aide Doug Bandow and former deputy assistant secretary Victoria Taylor. Bandow argued Trump believed the war would be short but was surprised by Iran's ability to close the Strait of Hormuz and devastate regional partners, leaving diplomacy as his best option. Taylor said Trump has always balanced competing instincts for both a deal and decisive military force, but noted Iran feels "very confident" it can outlast the US and has demonstrated it does not need to make major concessions.
Media tied Trump's pivot to $100 oil and Wall Street fears, while regional allies warned of a "failed state" and Iran dismissed talks as "negotiating with yourselves."
The panel agreed that while Trump faces pressure from his anti-war base and rising fuel prices, and Gulf states want the threat dismantled, Israel's desire for regime change complicates any exit. Bandow questioned whether Trump is willing to tell Netanyahu to stop when he wants to, while Taylor concluded that neither side has softened its positions, making a deal difficult to reach at this moment. As Trump simultaneously sends more troops to the region while pursuing back-channel diplomacy via Pakistan, the war's direction remains uncertain.
