India has achieved a major milestone in defence technology with the successful completion of Phase 2 of its Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation. This advancement places India among a select group of nations capable of neutralising Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs).
The latest trials demonstrated the effectiveness of both exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric interception using advanced interceptors like AD-1 and AD-2. Backed by powerful radar systems such as Swordfish (derived from Israel’s Green Pine), India’s missile shield can detect, track, and destroy incoming threats across multiple layers.
With Phase 3 already underway, India is now preparing to counter emerging threats like hypersonic glide vehicles and MIRVs (Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles). This development significantly boosts India’s strategic deterrence against adversaries like China and Pakistan.
