In ancient Greece, welcoming a stranger was more than good manners. It was a sacred obligation that could win divine favor, forge alliances, and bind families together for generations. This video explores xenia, the ancient Greek ritual of hospitality, through Homer’s Odyssey, Greek mythology, politics, diplomacy, and everyday elite life. We follow the rules that transformed strangers into trusted friends: introductions, supplication, ritual handshakes, feasts, gifts, tokens, and hereditary obligations. Homer shows both sides of the custom. Telemachus, Menelaus, Nestor, the Phaeacians, and Eumaeus uphold xenia, while Polyphemus and Penelope’s suitors violate it with deadly consequences. Euripides’ Elektra reveals how even righteous vengeance could become sacrilege when guest rights were betrayed. Xenia was also a powerful political weapon. Greek city-states adapted it into proxenia for foreign ambassadors, Philip II of Macedon used ritual friendship to expand his influence, and Hellenistic kings built networks of loyalty stretching from Greece and Egypt to Persia, Bactria, and India. It connected households, royal courts, distant cities, and peoples who might otherwise meet as enemies. Discover why Greeks treated guests like gods, how hospitality shaped the Odyssey, and why this sacred custom became essential to travel, diplomacy, power, and survival across the ancient Mediterranean world.
