LIVE: Trump's Airstrikes on Venezuela and Maduro's Capture Gain Critics, Supporters |World Reactions

US airstrikes on Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolas Maduro have triggered sharply divided reactions across the world. While some Venezuelans living abroad were seen celebrating Maduro’s arrest, his supporters rallied in Caracas, demanding his immediate release. As the situation escalates, global leaders are weighing in, revealing deep diplomatic fault lines. India called the developments “a matter of deep concern” and urged dialogue, while China described the US strike as a “clear violation of international law.” Mexico’s president condemned US intervention, stressing respect for sovereignty and international legal order. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called the move a “serious affront” to Venezuelan sovereignty, while Chile’s President Gabriel Boric warned that Venezuela could set a dangerous precedent.
European leaders offered mixed responses. Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the US action as legally "complex", UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Britain would "shed no tears" over the Maduro regime’s demise, and France insisted that no solution to Venezuela’s crisis can be imposed externally. Elsewhere, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the end of Maduro’s rule could offer new hope for Venezuela, while Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky hinted that confronting dictators may sometimes require decisive action. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Donald Trump for what he called “bold and historic leadership.” In contrast, South Africa criticised the use of “unlawful, unilateral force”. The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to convene on January 5 to discuss the US airstrikes on Venezuela.
