Jobs VANISH in Alberta while Carney visits Europe (again)
On today’s episode of The Candice Malcolm Show, guest host Kris Sims discusses massive layoffs sweeping across Calgary’s energy sector as Canada’s economic engine sputters — while Prime Minister Mark Carney is in Europe delivering word salad to global elites. Bill C-69, the tanker ban, and Ottawa’s so-called emissions cap are choking investment, driving away capital, and costing Canadians hundreds of billions in lost opportunity. To unpack what this means for the future of Canada, Kris is joined by Joanna Baron, Executive Director of the Canadian Constitution Foundation. Baron warns that Ottawa’s latest legal gambit — asking courts to overrule legislatures even when the notwithstanding clause is invoked — could ignite a constitutional crisis. It’s a move that risks deepening the divide between the provinces and Ottawa, weakening the very democratic safeguard that Prairie premiers insisted on when the Charter was first adopted.
At the same time, Alberta is bracing for another upheaval: a teachers’ strike backed by a 90% vote that could lock out 800,000 students. This despite the province offering major raises, new hires, and benefits that would make Alberta’s teachers the best-paid in Western Canada.
From energy layoffs to constitutional battles, and now a school shutdown threatening families across Alberta, the Liberals have no answers. Instead of solutions, Canadians get distractions, wordplay, and costly policies that make a bad situation worse.
