Chnéor, un Juif ‘hassidique américain, hérite d’une immense fortune après la mort de son père, qui lui avait tout transmis du judaïsme. Pour lui rendre hommage, il veut financer la construction d’un grand bâtiment communautaire en Israël. Deux communautés candidates se présentent : l’une semble vieillissante et peu dynamique, l’autre paraît débordante de vie. Pour se décider, Chnéor envoie un ami observer les deux lieux discrètement pendant deux Chabbathot. D’après son rapport, la deuxième communauté est bien plus vivante. Chnéor la choisit et finance le projet. Quand il vient visiter le bâtiment une fois construit, il le trouve presque vide et sans ferveur.
