Ia mengatakan Moskow tidak akan tinggal diam dan melakukan balasan jika Washington mengaktifkan nuklir mereka.
Pernyataan tersebut menandai eskalasi signifikan dalam retorika nuklir antara dua kekuatan nuklir paling krusial di dunia.
Ancaman pembalasan Rusia dan penarikannya dari perjanjian pengendalian senjata utama menandakan memburuknya hubungan strategis dengan Amerika Serikat.
Ketegangan antara kedua negara ini bertambah lantaran AS mendukung Ukraina di tengah perangnya dengan Rusia.
AS pun gagal mendamaikan kedua negara hingga membuat Rusia semakin menjaga jarak dengan Washington.
