You Need to stop Using INCOGNITO Mode Right Now

Incognito Mode doesn’t make you anonymous online, and it may reveal far more about you than you think.

When you open a private Chrome window, your browsing history and cookies are removed from your device after you close it. But that’s about where the privacy ends. Your IP address is still visible, your internet provider can still see which domains you visit, websites can still run tracking scripts, and browser fingerprinting can identify your device using details like your screen resolution, operating system, installed fonts, graphics hardware, and browser configuration. Even disabling cookies doesn’t necessarily stop it.
Techniques like canvas fingerprinting can generate a unique identifier for your device in milliseconds, while tools such as Google Analytics and advertising networks continue collecting data inside private browsing sessions. That gap between what users thought Incognito Mode did and what it actually did eventually led to a $5 billion class-action lawsuit against Google. Google settled the case in 2023 and agreed to destroy billions of records associated with private browsing activity while changing how Incognito Mode explains its limitations. But the basic lesson remains the same.

Private browsing can hide activity from someone using your device later, but it does not make you invisible on the internet.
