US Vice President JD Vance says ‘Very good foundation’ laid for final deal with Iran

At a press conference at the Lake Lucerne Summit in Switzerland, US Vice President JD Vance outlined what he described as four key achievements from the first round of high-level negotiations with Iran. First, a mechanism to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, with oil and gas flowing. Second, a deconfliction mechanism for the regional ceasefire, particularly in Lebanon, to prevent escalation. Third, Iran has agreed to invite IAEA inspectors back into the country – a major milestone toward permanently ending its nuclear weapons programme. Fourth, a structure for technical negotiations to continue over the coming weeks.
Vance said the talks laid a "very good foundation for a successful final deal," adding: "We set the foundation. We haven't built the house, but we've laid a successful foundation." On Iran's threat to walk out, Vance dismissed it, saying: "They did threaten to walk out... but we were negotiating well past 1:00 in the morning, so they didn't walk out."
On Lebanon, Vance said the deconfliction mechanism ensures that when incidents happen, sides are actually talking to each other. He said the past 24 hours had been "the most peaceful that we've seen the situation in Lebanon." When asked about Israeli withdrawal, he said the US wants Israel's security protected and Lebanon's sovereignty protected, adding that the Israelis do not have territorial intentions.
Vance also addressed frozen Iranian assets, saying any unfrozen funds would be used to buy American crops to feed the Iranian people, with approval from the US and Qatar – calling it a "classic Trump deal."
