India Opens Nuclear Power to Private Firms, Changes Liability Rules | Vantage with Palki Sharma|N18L
India’s Lok Sabha has passed the Shanti Bill, opening the nuclear power sector to private companies for the first time. The bill replaces the Atomic Energy Act of 1962, which kept nuclear power under complete central government control. Under the new law, Indian-registered private firms can build, own, operate and decommission nuclear power plants, while foreign companies may partner with Indian firms as minority stakeholders. The bill also amends nuclear liability rules by removing automatic supplier liability, capping operator liability at ₹3,000 crore, and creating a nuclear liability fund for damages beyond that limit. The government says oversight and safety regulations will remain unchanged.---
