The Five Civilized Tribes (a moniker now considered offensive to some) were a grouping of several indigenous peoples of the Southeast American states of Georgia, the Carolinas, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi including the Cherokee, Choctaw, Seminole, Creek and Chickasaw who were partially assimilated into Anglo-American society and culture and hence were considered more "civilized" than the hostile tribes of the Great Plains. Although some interactions with White settlers were positive, over the 19th century, the federal government would eventually relocate nearly the entirety of their communities leading to many deaths and loss of land/property. Today, their descendants live mostly in Oklahoma or in other states in the American South.
