Get Started with Microsoft Copilot Managed Runtime SDK + CLI — Build, Preview & Deploy Apps
Microsoft Copilot Managed Runtime is here — giving developers a new way to build code-first enterprise apps that run on a Microsoft-managed host with built-in identity, governance, data access, deployment, monitoring, and lifecycle management.In this full video tutorial, I walk through the Microsoft Copilot Managed Runtime SDK + CLI from start to finish.
We begin by understanding what Copilot Managed Runtime is, how the Host, SDK, and CLI fit together, and where this new app model sits across experiences such as Copilot Studio, Copilot Cowork, Copilot Code, VS Code, etc. Copilot Managed Runtime is a Microsoft-hosted platform for running code inside the Microsoft 365 tenant boundary, with centralized governance and management.
Then we jump into Visual Studio Code and build a managed app end to end.
You’ll see how to:
- Install and use the Copilot Managed Runtime CLI
- Create and scaffold a new app
- Understand the SDK + CLI + Host architecture
- Run the app locally
- Work with the Git-backed development experience
- Push the app to Preview
- Test the hosted preview experience
- Deploy the app to Live
- Add a SharePoint List as a data source
- Use a coding agent such as Claude Code to build the app experience
- Work with generated connector services and application code
- Redeploy the completed application
- Understand sharing, governance, and licensing considerations
The Copilot Managed Runtime CLI supports the full development lifecycle, including creating projects, working locally, adding governed connectors, previewing apps, and deploying validated versions to users. The SDK provides the bridge between your application code and services exposed through the managed runtime host.
This is a brand-new Public Preview experience, so if you build apps with Microsoft 365, Power Platform, Copilot Studio, VS Code, or AI coding agents, this is one you’ll want to understand.
