Exploring the streets of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, where I went on a hunt for the most authentic, ultra-local barbershop I could possibly find and I struck gold with a spot staffed entirely by local Taiwanese aunties.Kaohsiung, Taiwan 🇹🇼
Walking through the doors, the vibe was a little tense at first because nobody in the shop spoke a single word of English, and as you know, I don't speak any Chinese. Despite the intense language barrier, we somehow made it work through pointing and gestures, and one incredibly friendly auntie ended up giving me the deepest ear cleaning I have had in a long time. Her soothing old-school precision melted all that initial awkwardness right away.
I sat in the vintage barber chair for a traditional, deep Chinese ear picking and a total ear wax cleaning. The auntie was so sweet and skilled, using all her specialized local tools to give me the ultimate ASMR ear cleaning experience. I have to admit, a massive amount of ear wax came out, but my ears have never felt more clear and refreshed!
The absolute craziest part about this hidden gem? That meticulous ear cleaning only cost $3 (100 NTD)! Finding top-tier traditional grooming for such a budget-friendly price is exactly why I love traveling to spots like this.
By the time the grooming session was over, the initial language barrier had completely dissolved into genuine connection and huge smiles all around the shop.
As I finally packed up my camera gear and stepped out onto the Kaohsiung pavement, all the female auntie barbers gathered at the front glass windows, smiling and waving bye-bye to me as I walked away. It was such a heartwarming moment that perfectly captured the local culture. Moments like this are exactly why I think Taiwan is so friendly and nice; the warmth and hospitality of the people here are truly unmatched anywhere else in the world.
To perfectly cap off this incredible local adventure, I wandered over to a nearby Malawi coffee shop to grab a freshly brewed hot Americano. It was absolutely delicious and exactly what I needed to reflect on such an epic Taiwanese barbershop experience.
