North Korea didn’t begin with Kim Il Sung. Its story stretches back thousands of years through ancient kingdoms, Mongol invasions, royal dynasties, Japanese occupation, civil war, and one of the most dramatic political divisions in modern history.This video takes you through 5,000 years of Korean history, from the legendary founding of Gojoseon and the rise of Goguryeo to the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties. Along the way, Korea faced Khitan armies, Mongol conquest, Japanese invasions, Manchu domination, Western gunboats, and an accelerating struggle between China, Russia, Japan, and the United States for influence over the peninsula. Then came Japanese annexation in 1910, decades of colonial rule, forced labor, cultural suppression, and resistance. After Japan’s defeat in 1945, Korea was divided along the 38th parallel between Soviet and American occupation zones. That temporary division became permanent. Kim Il Sung established North Korea in 1948, invaded the South in 1950, and survived a devastating war that killed millions. In the decades that followed, the Kim dynasty built an increasingly isolated dictatorship based on propaganda, surveillance, political purges, prison camps, songbun, and an extraordinary cult of personality.
From ancient kings and Mongol armies to nuclear weapons, famines, defectors, K-pop smuggling, and Kim Jong-un, this is the long history behind one of the most secretive countries on Earth.
