Marvin Webster Gets Called for a Rim Hanging Technical Foul in 1978
Some notes:1. The NBA did not standardize breakaway rims league-wide until the 1981-82 season.
2. The rims used prior to breakaways, which did not pivot downward as a means of absorbing force, were much more susceptible to permanent bending and/or breaking. As a result, the NBA had tighter rules on rim-hanging, as Marvin Webster demonstrated with even the briefest of rim-grabs could yielding a technical foul penalty.
3. This dunk attempt (and subsequent technical foul) took place a little over a year before Darryl Dawkins pulverized two backboards in a two-week span in November 1979.
