Build a Mini Weather Station | Wind Speed | Anemometer

🌪️ In this tutorial, we are continuing to build our mini weather station using the ELECFREAKS Smart Climate Kit and a BBC micro:bit!

This time, we are measuring wind speed using an anemometer!

We will connect our anemometer to the IoT:bit, write some code using Microsoft MakeCode, and display live wind speed readings on our little OLED screen.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to:
✅ Identify the components needed to measure wind speed
✅ Connect the anemometer to your IoT:bit and micro:bit
✅ Use Microsoft MakeCode to program the wind speed sensor
✅ Display live wind speed readings on the OLED screen
✅ Convert wind speed from metres per second (m/s) to kilometres per hour (km/h)
✅ Test your circuit and check that everything is working

🧮 Converting Wind Speed

Our anemometer measures wind speed in metres per second (m/s), but weather forecasts in Australia commonly use kilometres per hour (km/h).

To convert between them, we simply multiply by 3.6!

Wind Speed (km/h) = Wind Speed (m/s) × 3.6

For example, a wind speed of 5 m/s is equal to 18 km/h.

Equipment used:
• BBC micro:bit
• ELECFREAKS Smart Climate Kit
• IoT:bit expansion board
• Anemometer (wind speed sensor)
• OLED display

🌏 Why measure wind speed?

Wind speed is an important part of weather monitoring. Meteorologists use anemometers to track changing weather conditions, forecast storms and issue severe weather warnings.

This is another step towards building your very own mini weather station!

Perfect for students, teachers and anyone interested in weather, electronics, coding and STEM education!
