Tra accuse, arresti e carcere, il cofondatore e caporedattore di WikiLeaks ha patteggiato per aver pubblicato migliaia di documenti militari secretati. Per questo il giornalista australiano è stato per molto tempo considerato uno dei simboli della lotta per la libertà di stampa. Almeno fino a quando non ha ritoccato il suolo del suo Paese natale. Scatta il revisionismo e su Assange e sul suo operato accusatorio nei confronti degli Stati Uniti piovono critiche.
Dopo anni Assange ritorna in Australia, ma con molta difficoltà. Questo perché in Australia di tutele vere e proprie nei confronti dei cosiddetti "whistleblower" non ce ne sono, tranne per alcune sfumature di natura parlamentare: proprio in queste aveva sperato Assange candidandosi al Senato australiano nel 2013. Il giornalista non ebbe successo e l'immunità parlamentare non si verificò.
Giusto 11 anni dopo, sempre al Senato australiano, si discute di una legge a tutela dei whistleblowers.
Il senatore Malcolm Roberts ne fa un elogio in aula ricordando, però, anche un altro particolare momento in cui la libertà di stampa pare aver avuto alcuni nemici.
