Greece's mobile hospital: Providing medical care to remote islands | DW Documentary

Greece has more than 200 inhabited islands, many of which lack medical facilities. Fortunately, there are doctors who travel to even the most remote Aegean islands, providing health care on a volunteer basis.

This film follows a group of health workers as they travel to the island of Serifos. With two trucks full of medical equipment, they set up a temporary hospital there, which will operate for several days.

Ten years ago, Greece's Stavros Niarchos Foundation established a system of mobile medical teams. Each month, they travel by ferry from Athens to provide medical care to small, remote islands for short periods. Many islanders cannot afford the cost of a visit to a doctor on the mainland, and in winter, sea crossings are often impossible due to bad weather.

Ophthalmologist Christos Christoulakis has been involved from the very beginning: "We give something, but we also get so much in return," he says. He's on his way to Serifos together with Tasos Stamatiadis, the mission's technical director. The ferry is also carrying two trucks of medical equipment, including a portable X-ray machine, a 3D mammography machine, and a bone density scanner. In just a few hours, a pop-up hospital will be set up on Serifos, and for a few days the island will have the medical infrastructure of a small town. There are also many other specialists and nurses, all working on a volunteer basis. The island's residents eagerly await the medical team. Many of the population of nearly 1,500 get checkups, often seeing several different specialists. Crucially, the "traveling hospital" allows people to continue living on Serifos despite the lack of infrastructure. However, some patients are advised to seek treatment on the mainland — such as Susanna Diogou, who is experiencing the symptoms of paralysis in her left foot. But leaving to get medical care also means being separated from her family for an extended period — a dilemma faced by many people on Greece's remote islands.
