How Global Chip Shortage Is Impacting India’s Smartphone Market | FP Explains
India shipped 64.2 million smartphones in the first half of 2026, down 7.9% and the weakest half year in five years, according to market data intelligence company IDC.The reason is not weak demand. It is memory. A global shortage of DRAM and NAND chips, driven by AI data centres, has pushed memory prices up fourfold since September 2025, according to Counterpoint Research. Memory and storage used to be 15 to 20% of what it costs to build a phone. By June 2026 it was 45%.
Chinese budget brands have been hit hardest. Vivo, Realme, Xiaomi and Oppo all saw shipments fall. Samsung and Apple, which sit higher up the price ladder, gained share.
Here’s how the global memory shortage is impacting India’s smartphone market.
