Digger Movie Review & Analysis | Tom Cruise | Firstpost Movie Reviews | First Cut
#Digger, starring #TomCruise and directed by #AlejandroGInarritu, is probably the weirdest Tom Cruise movie you'll see this year. A satirical disaster movie about an oil tycoon, environmental catastrophe and the absurdity of power, Digger takes a very unexpected turn that completely changes what you think you're watching. In this episode of Firstpost Presents: First Cut, Dabeet Singh reviews and analyses Digger, breaking down the performances, writing, visuals, satire, comedy, the big twist and everything that works and doesn't.
The film follows Tom Cruise as Digger Rockwell, an oil tycoon whose actions contribute to a catastrophic environmental disaster. But instead of giving us another straightforward Hollywood disaster movie, Alejandro G. Iñárritu takes the story somewhere much stranger.
And that's what makes Digger so interesting.
It took me around 10–15 minutes to get into the movie, but once it clicked, I was completely hooked. The writing is unpredictable, the satire is ambitious and the film keeps changing the kind of movie you think you're watching.
Tom Cruise is also completely committed to the madness. His performance is exaggerated and larger than life, but there's a reason for it, and once you understand what the movie is doing, the performance starts making much more sense.
Visually, Digger is equally ambitious. The production design, cinematography and camera movement create a heightened world that feels very different from a conventional Hollywood studio movie. The film was shot by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, and the visual scale has been widely noted in current reviews.
But the movie isn't perfect.
At 129 minutes, Digger can feel too long, especially when it continues making a point you've already understood. The comedy is also extremely specific. Some jokes are hilarious, while others can feel self-indulgent and overly deliberate. That split is reflected in the current critical response, which has been notably divided over the film's satire, tone and meta twist.
So, is Digger worth watching in theatres? Is Tom Cruise's strangest performance actually worth the hype? And does the film's massive twist work?
