Perché un giovane uomo d’affari della seconda metà dell’Ottocento, intraprendente, con moglie ricca e cinque figli, sceglie di mettersi in viaggio per mare per finire i suoi giorni a Hiva Oa, una delle isole più sperdute del Pacifico? È quello che fa Paul Gauguin, tra i più importanti artisti moderni, nato a Parigi nel 1848 e morto proprio qui, tra palme e agrumi rari.
A Roma, al Museo Storico della Fanteria, la mostra «Gauguin – Il diario di Noa Noa e altre avventure» (fino al 25 gennaio) prende spunto proprio dalle opere nate nei lunghi anni trascorsi dal pittore nelle isole polinesiane, dove trovò finalmente la pittura ma, insieme a questa, incontrò anche la sua fine.
