Nell'audizione alla Camera, il professor Bhattacharya ha sostenuto le tesi portate avanti anche nella Great Barrington Declaration, una lettera, firmata da autorevoli scienziati in tutto il mondo, che proponeva una strategia alternativa ai lockdown generalizzati chiamata 'Focused Protection': proteggere in modo mirato le persone ad alto rischio (anziani e vulnerabili) mentre si lasciavano aperte scuole, università, attività lavorative e sociali per il resto della popolazione a basso rischio, al fine di ridurre i danni collaterali sulla salute pubblica, sull’economia e sulla società. Proprio su questo si è acceso il dibattito in Commissione Covid tra il direttore del NIH e l'On. Alfonso Colucci (M5S).
