Il summit è stato organizzato principalmente dall'Unione Europea e dalla Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, cioè dai principali finanziatori dell'organizzazione. Il presidente del consiglio direttivo di GAVI è José Manuel Barroso, ex Presidente della Commissione europea, e ha un ruolo fondamentale nel processo della raccolta fondi. Questa si tiene ogni 5 anni. Partecipano governi di tutto il mondo, tra cui l'Italia. Proprio il 25 giugno è stato il ministro degli esteri Antonio Tajani ad annunciare un rifinanziamento di 250 milioni di euro. Qualcun altro invece ha annunciato di non voler sostenere l'organizzazione per i prossimi cinque anni.
