Caligula is remembered as one of Rome’s most infamous emperors, a byword for cruelty, madness, and excess. But how much of that image is truth, and how much was shaped by hostile ancient sources? This video explores the early life and rise of Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, better known as Caligula, from his childhood in the camps of Germanicus to the brutal intrigues of Tiberius’ court on Capri. It follows the trauma that shaped him, including the destruction of his family, his careful political survival under Tiberius, and the alliances that eventually carried him to power in 37 CE. The episode then examines his wildly popular accession, his generosity toward the people and soldiers, his attempts to position himself in the tradition of Augustus, and the succession crisis triggered by his near-fatal illness. Rather than simply repeating the familiar image of a mad tyrant, this video looks at Caligula as a politically skilled and deeply damaged ruler navigating a dangerous imperial system. It also traces how his reforms, extravagance, and rejection of elite Roman norms began to create the tensions that would define the darker phase of his reign.
