Lake More Deadly Than Chernobyl
There was once a lake in Russia so radioactive that standing near its most contaminated shoreline for just one hour could deliver a lethal dose. Its name was Lake Karachay.Hidden near the Soviet Union’s secret Mayak nuclear complex, this small lake became a dumping ground for enormous quantities of radioactive waste during the Cold War. As the USSR raced to build its nuclear arsenal, contaminated water was released into the nearby Techa River and later into Lake Karachay, exposing surrounding communities to dangerous radioactive materials. Then came the 1957 Kyshtym disaster, one of history’s worst nuclear accidents. A decade later, a severe drought exposed Lake Karachay’s contaminated sediments, allowing radioactive dust to spread across the countryside. Eventually, Russian authorities decided to make the lake disappear. By 2015, it had been filled with concrete blocks, rock, and soil. But burying the lake didn’t eliminate the radioactive waste. Beneath the surface, a massive plume of contaminated groundwater remains a long-term environmental concern.
