NYPD Officer Fires Gun After Suspect Swings Knife at Police
* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *Staten Island, NY — On Monday, March 25, 2024, at approximately 6:00 a.m., Detective Genaro Barreiro along with additional officers assigned to the Staten Island Warrant Squad, initiated an investigation to locate the 30-year-old Marcelino Allende, who was wanted for an Assault in the Second Degree with a weapon. The investigation brought the Warrant Squad officers to 101 Daniel Low Terrace, Staten Island, where Allende was known to reside in an apartment at that location. Detective Barreiro remained outside of the building while other officers knocked on the door of Allende's apartment.
Shortly thereafter, Allende was observed exiting his apartment from a window and entering the fire escape. Allende remained on the fire escape for approximately five minutes during which time the officers ordered him to surrender. Allende refused to do so and reentered his apartment. Detective Barreiro along with other officers entered the apartment and located Allende inside a bedroom in possession of a knife. Detective Barreiro deployed a Taser Conducted Electrical Weapon at Allende, which caused him to fall to the floor. Allende, however, maintained possession of the knife in his right hand.
Detective Barreiro ordered Allende to drop the knife, however, Allende refused and swung at the detective with it. As a result, Detective Barreiro discharged one shot from his service firearm. Allende was not struck by the gunshot. Allende relinquished possession of the knife and was taken into custody without further incident. For his actions, Allende was arrested and charged with Menacing a Police Officer, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third and Fourth Degree, Menacing in the Second Degree, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Resisting Arrest, and related charges.
