The 36th NATO summit is officially underway in Turkey's capital, Ankara. Canada and European members have kicked off the summit with major defence deals. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has awarded Germany the contract for 12 Type 212 submarines. The project worth $30 Billion is the most expensive weapons deal in Canada's history. Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced that Europe will purchase a strategic airlift fleet of Airbus A-400 aircraft and a 10 aircraft AWACS fleet of Sweden's SAAB GlobalEye. For the first time in nearly 30 years, Europe will not go with the Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS.
