La Commissione von der Leyen vuole interrompere in maniera definitiva la fornitura con lo scopo di infliggere un danno alla Russia, tramite la stessa logica delle sanzioni. "Sin dall'inizio l'Ucraina ha potuto fare affidamento sull'Europa. Dobbiamo far sì che la guerra costi per Putin", ha detto von der Leyen, che con questo intento punta a mettere le mani sugli asset russi congelati, incontrando ancora, per ora, delle resistenze. Sul gas l'opposizione arriva soprattutto dai Paesi dell'Est Europa, tra cui Slovacchia e Ungheria. Robert Fico e Viktor Orban hanno svariate volte insistito per fermare lo stop alla fornitura, considerata fondamentale per non far schizzare in alto le bollette dei cittadini. L'Ungheria lo ha ripetuto ancora in occasione del recente vertice NATO dei ministri degli Esteri. Un "diktátum ideologico" lo definisce il ministro degli Esteri ungherese Péter Szijjártó, che alla questione aggiunge una pesante accusa a Bruxelles: "Già durante l'ultima riunione del Consiglio dei ministri degli Esteri mi era sembrato strano che nessuno menzionasse l'enorme scandalo di corruzione in corso in Ucraina"
