Before Mindvalley's Head of Content goes on stage, his nerves sit at about an eight or nine out of ten.

Then he does something that sounds ridiculous. He moves his attention into his stomach. Within a minute or so, the nerves are down to two or three.

Paul McKenna taught him that, and in this session he teaches it to a room of several hundred people, then proves it on someone who's terrified of public speaking. She starts at a nine. She ends up holding the microphone and talking about her life.

The technique borrows from Aikido. Give the fear a number out of ten first, because without a number you can't tell whether anything changed. Then move your attention from your head to the centre of your body and hold it there. Watch the number come down.

Nobody can see you doing it, which is the part that makes it useful before a meeting, an interview or a difficult conversation.

The rest of the hour is about why it works. Paul's argument is that confidence isn't a personality trait you either have or don't. It's a state, built from three things: the voice in your head, the pictures you make, and what your body is doing. Change any one and the state changes with it.

He also works on self-image, including a method for taking the power out of harsh self-talk, and closes by asking the room to look at themselves through the eyes of someone who loves them.

Recorded live at Mindvalley University.
