Chernobyl loses all off-site power after attacks on Ukraine’s grid, IAEA raises alarm
The UN’s nuclear watchdog says Ukraine’s Chernobyl plant has lost all off-site power after Russian strikes hit the electricity grid.The IAEA warns that several substations vital for nuclear safety were damaged, affecting power supplies to multiple nuclear facilities.
Although Chernobyl’s reactor exploded in 1986, external electricity is still needed to safely manage nuclear waste at the site.
Ukraine’s foreign minister accuses Russia of deliberately targeting energy infrastructure linked to nuclear facilities.
IAEA chief Rafael Grossi says the agency is closely monitoring risks to plants including Rivne and South Ukraine.
He says experts remain deployed across Ukraine to help prevent accidents amid widespread power disruptions.
The IAEA stresses the situation is delicate, with nuclear safety dependent on restoring stable electricity supplies.
