Iran and US hold indirect Doha talks on implementing MoU

Iran and the US are holding indirect technical talks in Doha on the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed two weeks ago, with Qatar and Pakistan acting as mediators. Tehran says both the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's frozen assets are being discussed, though it has no plans to meet directly with the American delegation. Iran's chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said the MoU must be fully implemented before talks on a final comprehensive agreement. He added: "We are engaged in dialogue. But if they refuse to implement what has been agreed, we are prepared for war."
Under the agreement, technical obstacles in the Strait of Hormuz are to be addressed within 30 days, including navigational safety, mine clearance and restoring safe passage for shipping.
Al Jazeera's Osama Bin Javaid, reporting from Doha, said Qatar's Prime Minister has met separately with Iranian and US delegations, with discussions covering implementation of the MoU and Lebanon, which Iran wants treated as a priority under the agreement. He said there has been progress, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the cessation of hostilities, but the most difficult issues remain unresolved. He added that the 60-day timeline for implementing the 14-point MoU may not be enough, as mediators work to bridge deep mistrust between the two sides.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media report that a container ship has run aground in the Strait of Hormuz after taking a route not designated by Iran. The Revolutionary Guard says vessels should transit closer to Iran's southern coast.
