Why I joined Product Management At IPL! - Sumukha M | Shields Fitness Club | Co-Founder
Sumukha, is a Bangalore-based engineer turned entrepreneur who has been running a fitness club for the past three years. Having managed every aspect of his business "from scratch to customer," he realized that the role he was performing locally is exactly what Product Managers do at scale. He joined IPL to transition his problem-solving skills from a local radius to a global, large-scale business context. He primary motivation was to understand the mechanics of problem-solving at scale. While his fitness club allowed him to solve problems for a specific community, he sought the "product lens" to address much larger, complex market issues.
From Local to Global: Moving beyond a small geographic radius to understand how to manage products that serve millions.
Beyond the Certificate: Unlike other institutes that focused on "sales pressure" and quick exits, he chose IPL because he wanted deep, quality learning rather than just a piece of paper.
Trust through Alumni: His decision was solidified after reviewing the portfolio of the institute and speaking with alumni who verified the depth of the curriculum.
He identifies three specific factors that make the learning environment unique:
- The "Enlightened" Mentors: He notes that the mentors don't just teach; they shift your entire thinking process. He realized that conventional ways of approaching problems were often distinct from the "actual product thinking process" practiced by experts.
- The Experienced Cohort: The classroom is highly interactive. Because the cohort consists of experienced professionals, Sumuk found that he learned as much from peer discussions and differing solutions as he did from the lectures.
- The Capstone Rigor: The hands-on nature of the Capstone projects allows students to apply theoretical knowledge immediately, often learning through collaboration with their high-calibre peers.
For those looking to follow a similar path from engineering or entrepreneurship into product, he offers these tips:
- Unlearn to Learn: Enter the program as a "blank page." Being open to new ways of thinking is essential because product management often challenges your existing biases.
- High Energy Participation: To get the most out of the course, you must be energetic and fully dive into every Capstone and workshop.
- Leverage Mentorship: The mentors are ready to guide you at any point; don't hesitate to approach them for insights and direction.
