Die Idee der Efterskole geht auf das 19. Jahrhundert zurück, als Nikolai Grundtvig, ein Pfarrer und Philosoph, erklärte, Bildung sollte für alle zugänglich sein, in Sprachen und Kulturen verankert und die Unabhängigkeit fördern.

Jede Efterskole hat ihren eigenen Lehrplan, der in der Regel Kernfächer wie Mathematik, Dänisch und Englisch umfasst. Einige haben auch einen Schwerpunkt: zum Beispiel Sport oder Theater. Die Efterskole in Ollerup hat ein Musikprofil.

In Dänemark ist Bildung kostenlos und wird durch Steuern finanziert. Der Besuch einer Efterskole ist jedoch kostenpflichtig. Die Schulen werden privat im Auftrag des Staates betrieben. Ein Jahr an der Schule in Ollerup kostet zwischen 9.000 und 13.200 Euro und wird entsprechend dem Einkommen der Eltern subventioniert. Die günstigsten Schulen kosten rund 6.500 Euro pro Jahr. Trotz der Kosten gelten die Schulen nicht als elitär und sind in der dänischen Mittelschicht nach wie vor beliebt.

Studien haben gezeigt, dass Jugendliche, die die Efterskole abschließen, „mit höherer Wahrscheinlichkeit ein Gymnasium beginnen und abschließen“, sagt Ulla Højmark, Professorin an der Universität Aalborg.
