Guy de Lusignan, noble menor del Poitou, ascendió rápidamente al casarse con Sibila de Jerusalén — unión orquestada por Agnès de Courtenay. Rechazado por barones como Raimundo III y apoyado por el belicoso Reinaldo de Châtillon, mostró debilidad como regente y perdió prestigio incluso en vida de Balduino IV. Coronado rey en 1186, condujo el reino al desastre: ignorando las advertencias, marchó a enfrentar a Saladino y fue derrotado en Hattin (1187), capturado y desmoralizado.
