Iran war disrupts global fertiliser supplies, threatening food security
The Middle East's vast oil and gas reserves have fuelled a critical fertiliser industry, with several countries exporting urea, ammonia, and phosphate fertilisers essential to nearly half of global food production. Qatar, a leading urea exporter, halted ammonia and urea manufacturing after Iranian drone strikes damaged facilities and liquefied natural gas production ceased. Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted fertiliser supplies, affecting nearly one-third of globally traded urea at a crucial time when farmers worldwide are sowing spring crops. India, the second-largest fertiliser consumer, imports 40 per cent of its urea and phosphate from the region, whilst Africa's severe food crisis threatens to worsen. Urea prices surged 20 per cent following the first strikes on Iran, with prolonged conflict expected to drive food prices higher.Al Jazeera’s Ume Kulsoom Shariff explains.
