The hymn begins by glorifying Shiva through sacred names such as Shambhu, Shankara, Sthanu, Umapati, Bhutesha, Tripurantaka, Trinayana, Shrikantha, Kalantaka, Rudra, Ishana, Maheshvara and Mahayogisha.
But its mood quickly changes.
Instead of continuing only with praise, the devotee turns inward and confesses anger, greed, pride, attachment, jealousy, laziness, harmful company, lack of discipline, spiritual negligence, dishonesty and attachment to worldly pleasures.
After these uncompromising confessions comes the repeated cry:
कारुण्याकरवारिधे भव पितर्दोषाकरं पाहि माम्
“O ocean of compassion, O Father, protect me who am filled with faults.”
This refrain contains the heart of the Stava. The devotee does not approach Shiva claiming spiritual perfection. He approaches precisely because he recognizes how far he has wandered.
The hymn therefore becomes a profound prayer of self-examination, repentance, humility, surrender and trust in Shiva's compassion.
