Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye have signed a landmark Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, declaring that an armed attack on one signatory will be regarded as an attack on all three. The pact has immediately triggered comparisons with NATO’s collective-defence principle and raised questions over whether a new “Islamic NATO” is emerging in West Asia.
Signed in Mecca on August 7, 2026, the agreement brings together three strategically important powers: Saudi Arabia’s economic and energy influence, Pakistan’s military and nuclear capabilities, and Türkiye’s advanced defence industry and NATO experience.
