Der Urnengang im bevölkerungsreichsten Bundesland ist der erste Stimmungstest in der Amtszeit der schwarz-roten Bundesregierung. Vor allem das Ruhrgebiet war traditionell tiefrotes SPD-Land. Viele wählten jahrzehntelang verlässlich die Sozialdemokraten. Doch ausgerechnet in einer einstigen SPD-Hochburg wie Gelsenkirchen lag bei der vergangenen Bundestagswahl die AfD knapp vorn.
